| Developing an entrepreneurial culture alone
will not help in generating more and more sustainable economic
activities. The products and services are to be competitive and
should find a place in the demand list of its users.
Competitiveness is not all about setting the prices right. More
importantly perhaps, it is the quality that counts. This is, all
the more significant in a State where consumers are quite aware
of their rights. This is also the State, which is ranked at par
with the developed countries in terms of Physical Quality of
Life Index. A large number of small-scale industries have been
set up taking advantage of the emerging opportunities in the
State. Unfortunately, many of these units fail to do well due to
non-adoption of proper quality standards. Quality certification
by recognized certifiers helps the entrepreneurs to produce
goods and services of acceptable standards. The need for
certification however depends on the market targeted. Quality
consciousness seems to lack mostly in small-scale units due to
ignorance. At a time when the small-scale units and small
entrepreneurs are expected to have a pivotal role in
spearheading the IT revolution and tourism industry, creating
awareness on quality becomes necessary if business ventures have
to have a fair chance of being successful and the products gain
acceptance among the targeted consumers. While producing quality
services and products, the entrepreneurs need to adopt standard
practices in the production process.
